UGT8 — UDP glycosyltransferase 8

UGT8 belongs to a gene co-expression module in 1 of 30 SCUBA cell types. Each module groups genes that rise and fall together in that cell type; the genes it shares a module with are its closest co-expression partners there.

Function

Catalyzes the transfer of galactose to ceramide, a key enzymatic step in the biosynthesis of galactocerebrosides, which are abundant sphingolipids of the myelin membrane of the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system. Galactosylates both hydroxy- and non-hydroxy fatty acid-containing ceramides and diglycerides (By similarity).
