FAR2 — Fatty acyl-CoA reductase 2

FAR2 belongs to a gene co-expression module in 2 of 28 SCUBA cell types. Each module groups genes that rise and fall together in that cell type; the genes it shares a module with are its closest co-expression partners there.

Function

Catalyzes the reduction of saturated but not unsaturated C16 or C18 fatty acyl-CoA to fatty alcohols (FAls). A lower activity can be observed with shorter fatty acyl-CoA substrates. Can produce very long-chain and ultra long-chain FAls, regardless of whether they have a straight or branched chain. Involved in the production of ether lipids/plasmalogens and wax monoesters whose synthesis requires FAls as substrates.
