Why this annotation
Hub genes DUOX2 and DUOXA2 encode the epithelial NADPH oxidase system that generates H2O2 at the mucosal surface — the top IBD-associated epithelial genes. SAA1/SAA2 are acute-phase reactants, PI3 is an innate immune protease inhibitor, S100A9 is an alarmin, TNIP3 is an NF-κB modulator, and ISG15 is interferon-stimulated. The module is strongly upregulated in UC/CD inflammation and reversed in remission. This is the canonical IBD epithelial oxidative/innate immune stress signature.
