Why this annotation
OLFM4 (stem/progenitor marker) is co-expressed with enterocyte and absorptive genes (CPS1, ALDOB, MAOA, UGT2B17, PHGR1, TSPAN8, PIGR, CFTR, MT1E). It also contains crypt secretory and mucosal defense genes (AGR2, DMBT1) and the epithelial nuclear receptor NR5A2. This mix suggests a crypt progenitor / immature Paneth–enterocyte transitional state or doublets/ambient signal from neighboring crypt epithelium. Uniform expression favors a transitional state or ambient signal over discrete contamination. I label it a crypt progenitor/absorptive program.
