Why this annotation
Hub genes LGI1, LMO3, RIC3, NCS1, MEF2C, DTNA, and PTGER3 are canonical neuronal markers (LGI1 is a neuronal secreted protein linked to epilepsy; LMO3 is a neuronal LIM-domain transcription factor; RIC3 is a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor chaperone; NCS1 is a neuronal calcium sensor). CSRP2, CAP2, DTNA, and SLC25A4 also appear in smooth muscle. The very low mean expression (0.030) and 2.1% pct positive with uniform distribution across fibroblast subsets indicates this is not a fibroblast program but rather contamination from enteric neurons or enteric glial cells present at low frequency. Neighbor modules M60 also shows neuronal signatures, supporting a shared enteric nervous system contamination theme.

Module annotations were drafted by a large language model from the module's genes, then reviewed and approved by a domain expert. See sources & licences.
