Why this annotation
Multiple genes are enriched in crypt colonocytes: NXPE4 (3.0x crypt), CFTR (2.2x crypt), PLCB4 (3.5x crypt), NECTIN3 (2.4x crypt). CFTR is the canonical cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator and a defining marker of crypt colonocytes responsible for chloride/fluid secretion. NXPE4 is a known crypt colonocyte marker. PLCB4 and TMEM38B (intracellular Ca2+ release channel) support ion signaling. UGT2A3 (glucuronidation/detoxification), EPHX2 (epoxide hydrolase), CYP27A1 (bile acid synthesis) add metabolic detoxification. ABCA2 (lipid transporter), SLC39A5 (zinc transporter) are additional transporters. Significantly downregulated in inflammation, restored in UC remission. This module represents crypt colonocyte identity with ion transport and detoxification functions.
