UFC1 — Ubiquitin-fold modifier conjugating enzyme 1
UFC1 belongs to a gene co-expression module in 2 of 28 SCUBA cell types. Each module groups genes that rise and fall together in that cell type; the genes it shares a module with are its closest co-expression partners there.

Function
E2-like enzyme which specifically catalyzes the second step in ufmylation. Accepts the ubiquitin-like modifier UFM1 from the E1 enzyme UBA5 and forms an intermediate with UFM1 via a thioester linkage. Ufmylation is involved in various processes, such as ribosome recycling, response to DNA damage, interferon response or reticulophagy (also called ER-phagy).
