Why this annotation
PMP22, PLP1, and MAL are canonical myelin sheath protein genes expressed by Schwann cells and myelinating glia. GPM6B is a neuronal/glial membrane glycoprotein related to PLP1. CD9 and CD81 are tetraspanins enriched in myelin and glial membranes. CALM2 (calmodulin) supports myelination signaling. LGALS1 (galectin-1) is expressed by Schwann cells and involved in axon-glia interaction. IGFBP7 is secreted by glia. TMEM176A/B are markers of immature/regulatory myeloid but also expressed in glia/enteric nervous system. PEBP1 (RKIP) and COMT are expressed in neural/glial cells. GSN (gelsolin) participates in actin remodeling in glia. MAL is a myelin/lipid raft protein. The module has the highest mean expression and pct positive, consistent with a core glial identity program. Downregulated in inflammation and partially recovered in remission.
