Why this annotation

This moderate-coherence module contains a heterogeneous set of genes. Hub genes include TKT (transketolase, pentose phosphate pathway), ENO1 (glycolysis), GPI (glycolysis), PPA1 (pyrophosphatase, housekeeping metabolism), and VDAC1 (mitochondrial membrane). Innate defense/secretory genes are also present: PIGR (polymeric immunoglobulin receptor, transepithelial IgA transport), DMBT1 (scavenger receptor, mucosal defense), PLA2G2A (secreted phospholipase, antibacterial), OLFM4 (goblet/stem cell marker), LGALS3BP (lectin), CTSS (cathepsin S, lysosomal protease), BOLA3 (Fe-S cluster), and PRDX1 (peroxiredoxin). The mild but significant upregulation in inflammation suggests a mixed housekeeping/secretory defense module. Given the moderate coherence and mix of metabolic and secretory innate defense genes in goblet cells, this most likely represents a basal goblet cell secretory/defense program combining metabolic support with innate mucosal barrier functions. The dominant signal is mucosal innate defense (PIGR, DMBT1, PLA2G2A, OLFM4, LGALS3BP, CTSS).
