Why this annotation
Hub genes DSG2 (desmosomal cadherin), CDH1 (E-cadherin), ATP1B1 (Na/K-ATPase β1), CTTN (cortactin), CTNNB1 (β-catenin), and CD2AP (junction scaffold) define a tight epithelial cell-cell junction and polarity program. ST14 (matriptase) and CDCP1 support epithelial surface integrity. The module is strongly upregulated in UC inflammation and suppressed in UC remission, consistent with reactive epithelial junction remodeling under inflammatory conditions. IL13RA1 presence links this to IL-13-driven UC epithelial responses. XIAP adds an anti-apoptotic survival component consistent with stressed but intact epithelium.
