Why this annotation
The top hub genes are canonical Type I interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs): OAS2, OAS3, MX1, IFIT1/2/3, IFI44L, IFI6, RSAD2, USP18, CMPK2, TRIM22, HERC6, ZNFX1, HELZ2, XAF1. This is a textbook IFN-I antiviral/inflammatory response signature. The module is strongly upregulated in inflamed colonocytes (delta_inflammation_UC = 0.918) and reverses with UC remission (delta_remission_UC = -0.791), consistent with IFN-driven epithelial inflammation in IBD. Enrichment in inf_colono and sen_colono subsets aligns with known IFN signaling in inflamed and senescent epithelium. A few peripheral genes (RSPH3, LIG4, DENND3, NEURL3) are weaker members but do not alter the dominant program.
